Dear Oxy community:

We write to you today with pride and gratitude for your wonderful support of The Oxy Campaign For Good. We began the academic year in August 2020 with a closed campus, a budget deficit, partially furloughed staff, and a community of students and faculty who needed to shift to remote teaching and learning for an unforeseeable time. Yet, through this historic moment, Oxy remained committed to our mission of providing a gifted and diverse group of students with a total educational experience of the highest quality—one that prepares them for leadership in an increasingly complex, interdependent and pluralistic world. We have rarely seen a time when our mission was more important. And, thankfully, you did, too. To be exact, 5,802 of you through your philanthropy recognized that Oxy’s mission was critical and necessary during these difficult times.

Because of the generosity of the Oxy community, we raised an impressive $31 million during the 2020-2021 academic year. As of November 1, your collective contributions allowed us to reach a new historic fundraising achievement of $197.6 million for The Oxy Campaign For Good, placing our goal of $225 million in close sight. Thank you - we couldn’t have done it without you!

In this Contributors Report, you’ll see the myriad and inspiring ways our community came together for our College. For example, on our second annual Day For Oxy, we again surpassed our gift goal for the 36 hour fundraising event, raising 3,069 gifts for a total of $1.7 million. Gifts impacted over 90 areas of campus, from scholarships to softball, geology to the Glee Club, while also supporting The Oxy Fund (with $851,950 raised to help meet the daily needs of the College). Importantly, this community effort provided immediate funding for the health, safety, learning and technology needs of our campus.

Additionally, we launched our first Legacy Challenge, which resulted in 29 new estate commitments to Oxy. Due to the foresight and generosity of these alumni, and the matching funds to the Oxy Fund as part of this challenge, we raised $7.6 million for Oxy students today and for generations to come.

Oxy Tigers from around the world also came together to welcome President Harry Elam, Jr. to Occidental. Through various virtual events, hundreds of alumni and parents were able to share their Oxy stories and hopes for the future. President Elam was, in turn, able to share his early vision for the College through virtual regional events and his first State of the College address.

Finally, in May 2021, we were overjoyed to welcome more than 600 students from the classes of 2020 and 2021 back to campus to celebrate their commencements. Students, their families, faculty and staff gathered safely on Patterson Field and, together, we felt a moving and powerful resurgence of Oxy spirit once again.

Thanks to you, this fall we re-opened our beautiful Eagle Rock campus and today classrooms, dorms, fields and the quad are vibrant and alive once again—the end result of our community’s shared efforts. Our deepest appreciation to each of you for your generosity and commitment to Oxy. What we have been able to achieve together during such a tumultuous time is truly extraordinary.
